Spring Valley is named for the natural spring located there. It was long the home of the Kumeyaay tribe, who called it Neti or Meti. Spanish conquerors drove off the natives and used the area for cattle, calling it El aguaje de San Jorge (St. George’s Spring).
In 1863 Judge Augustus S. Ensworth of San Diego filed a claim for a 160 acre (647,000 m²) ranch that included the spring. The ranch, and the small adobe house he built there, were sold to Rufus King Porter and later to historian Hubert Howe Bancroft. The adobe is now a National Historic Landmark.
Spring Valley is the largest un-incorporated community in the county of San Diego, covering thirteen and a half square miles. Located 11 miles east of the city of San Diego, Spring Valley is bordered by La Mesa and El Cajon to the North, Jamul and Dulzura to the East, Sweetwater and Bonita to the South, and Paradise Hills and Lemon Grove to the West. Within Spring Valley’s boundaries can be found a variety of smaller communities – Casa de Oro, Rancho San Diego, La Presa, Dictionary Hill, Mt. Helix, and Bancroft. Today it is dotted with condos and affordable homes to house its dense population of more than 100,000 residents.
The area is known for its community center, where youth can participate in a full gymnastic program at the center, and dance classes teach styles from ballet to hip-hop. Adult classes range from belly dancing to investments, and seniors are well served by a variety of programs and activities, from senior lunches to tea dances.
