The University of California is located in La Jolla, and is well known for its engineering and science departments, as well as some notable achievements from its research departments. A popular tourist destination is the Birch Aquarium at Scripps – an award-winning aquarium with a large kelp tank, species from across the Pacific as well as sharks and living coral.
