Best Buy, Frys, Circuit City, Costco, and Walmart.... My Honest Analysis!
This article details my honest, sincere feelings about the biggest corporate tech companies out there. Juicy reading!
Best Buy (Geek Squad) is rampant with too many customer complaints. They charge too much for simple things on a computer. Many times they don't do a thorough job. I know personally, as I watched the nightmare one of my friends went through with the Geek Squad after he had many problems with his new computer that he bought. In this case, I had to intervene and personally help fix the problems with the computer that the Geek Agents couldn't solve.
There are also several lawsuits against Geek Squad and former Geek Agents for doing things they were not supposed to be doing on the job. I've done the research on this, and it is scary. One agent was caught stealing porn files from a customer computer (when he was ONLY supposed to be fixing the computer). Another Geek Agent was caught spying on a customer, when she was in the shower!!! Oops! Good grief! If you can't trust your Geek Agent, WHO can you trust?
Former EX managers for Geek Squad have confessed to hiring kids from McDonalds to be Geek techs and agents. If that isn't scary enough!
The more I hear about Best Buy and the Geek Squad screw ups the more frustrated I get! I've been dealing with a friend who has an HP machine with Vista Premium that has had many problems since he got it! It is amazing to see the lack of support by Geek Squad, even after my friend has purchased a service agreement!!! They won't even make house calls to my friend, even though he has full service! I am blown away at how the largest computer chain's tech guys can't even do service right!
CompUSA is no longer in San Diego, they closed down all their stores here. No longer are they in the market here.
Costco is very limited on computer selection, same as Walmart. Not much of computer choices, just cheap PC boxes that will have problems later on. No one is "Computer Saavy" to help you pick a computer at Costco or Walmart. You are on your own to get what you need.
Circuit City is similar to Best Buy, where they don't have the best selections, and are a large chain store where the personal touch is often missing.
That leaves us with Fry's Electronics, which has the largest selection of ALL the local computer stores, but it is VERY hard to get one to one help, as the Frys staff are overloaded with too many customers. Plus Fry's has a long line at the returns desk... The place is so big, that you feel like you're going to get lost trying to find what you need.
Sad, but many of the demo models of computers on display are barely working, not working, off, or have errors. Not ideal when a company is trying to sell their computer. There was a very nice HP computer that I wanted to look at, and explore, but it had a serious windows error that I couldn't fix as I didn't have Admin access. Bad image for HP, that one of their top of the line PCs was malfunctioning.
I often feel like Fry's is like a big Zoo. There are so many people there, that it gets overcrowded on the weekends. Messed up computers, too many people there, not enough clerks who are already overwhelmed with customer requests and trying to keep the shelves organized.
What is normally suppossed to be a fun time looking at computers can quickly be chaotic, loud with stereo music blaring from a dozen stereos, tiring, frustrating, and take too long to get any help. Sometimes I leave Fry's kind of dizzy, and unable to think as it was too chaotic, noisy, crowded, not fun at times. Many times I just want to go in and get just what I need and leave, but it is not always that easy with Frys. Whatever happened to plain old fashioned courtesy and fun in Computer Stores? I guess that got lost in the pursuit of bigger profits.
